Spring Lake is the north-gate town in this set. The ledger is short enough to say in one line and long enough to argue with: the shortest drive, the lowest price level, and the highest combined tax rate, on a small sample. Orders and maps printed before the March 7, 2025 ceremony may still read Fort Liberty. The post is Fort Bragg.

Five to seven minutes, and what that leaves out
Town Hall, 300 Ruth Street, ZIP 28390, to Honeycutt Road, Gate 10 (open 24 hours), is 2.8 miles and typically 5 to 7 minutes at 7:00 a.m. on Monday, October 5, 2026. No other town in this set is inside 10 minutes, and none of the others is measured to a north gate.
That range stops at the gate and excludes the ID-check wait. Honeycutt is one of the north gates expected to take traffic while Gate 5 is closed (from 5 a.m. on July 27, 2026, for up to 24 months), along with R. Miller Street and Butner Road. R. Miller is open 24 hours. Butner Road is 5 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekdays and closed weekends and federal holidays. The time on this page stays on Honeycutt.

The highest combined rate, taken apart
1.29 per $100 is town 0.741 plus recreation 0.05 plus county 0.499, the highest combined rate of the six. The published Cumberland combined rate excludes storm water, solid waste, refuse, recycling, and transit or auto privilege taxes. The annual refuse tax is $396 ($384 plus a $12 litter-control fee), outside the 1.29. Hope Mills’ refuse line is $342.72. Assessed value is not a sale price. The last Cumberland revaluation set market values as of January 1, 2025.

The lowest band, on a small sample
This is the lowest price level of the six, on a small sample. A thin set of deeds moves when a few sales drop in or out. The layer does not say whether sales were arm’s-length. ZIP 28390 is in NC182, so the allowance stays the Fort Bragg rate. The duty-station ZIP is 28310.

Check the county on the deed
For any specific address near the county line, check the county on the deed and on the tax bill. This page’s tax rate is the Cumberland County combined rate for Spring Lake, and this page’s school system is Cumberland County Schools. Another county on the deed means both of those lines can be the wrong lines. The drive to Honeycutt Road was measured from Town Hall, which is the Spring Lake address used here, not from every lot near the line.
Schools follow the county of residence
Students attend schools where they reside. When the address is in Cumberland County, the system is Cumberland County Schools. Confirm the school by address. Fort Bragg Schools require living on post. The on-post district high school is E.E. Smith High. Eligible active-duty families living on Fort Bragg, not a Spring Lake street, can use the high school election process and then drive their own student.
For county residents, the K-12 choice program takes applications in January and February, and the family provides transportation. Kindergarten is age 5 on or before August 31. High schools in the area use a 4x4 schedule. Military families moving to Fort Bragg may enroll in public school remotely before residency is established. A 4x4 calendar is the fact to check if a high schooler arrives mid-year, including a student whose morning ride is only a few minutes.

Who it suits
Spring Lake suits a move that is priced around the north gate and will trade the highest combined rate, plus the refuse line, for the shortest approach in this set. It is a poor fit when the small sample is being read as a deep market, and when an address near the county line has not been checked on the deed. It is a poor fit for a household whose priority is the tax rate itself. Every Moore County town in this set is lower, and every one of them is a much longer drive to Yadkin Road.
Nearby alternatives
Fayetteville is the south-gate city: Yadkin Road instead of Honeycutt, a longer range, a lower ordinary tax rate, and a sales sample large enough to hide several markets inside one band.
Hope Mills is farther south again, with two routes to Yadkin Road, a lake-town setting, and a combined rate between Fayetteville and Spring Lake.
Southern Pines is the near Moore County option: 30 to 45 minutes to Yadkin Road, prices about double the Cumberland towns, and a summed tax rate well under Spring Lake’s.
Aberdeen and Pinehurst extend that Moore drive. Pinehurst is the longest range and the lowest tax rate. Aberdeen sits between them on the clock, with the lowest Moore price level, still well above Cumberland.
